| Not sure why this is on my mind but here are a few Latin phrase I learned in high school Latin with Ms. Millsap (God rest her soul). Many people use these incorrectly so now you can be more precise. etc.– this has formed out of a shortening of the phrase et cetera. This literally translates to “and so on” or “and the rest”. It is probably the most common used Latin phrase in our current language. You would use it at the end of a long list that you don’t want to finish or there is no reason to finish the individual items on the list. “the whole class– Bob, Lindsay, Grace, Heath, etc.” e.g.– exempli gratia–literally translates to “for the sake of example”. This is used when you are about to provide an example. It is basically the same as saying “for example”. Here it is in motion: “Getting on the internet can be dangerous, e.g. there are always people phishing for your financial information” i.e.– id est–literally translates to “that is”. Very frequently misused with e.g. They are not the same. i.e. gives a more specific or precise equivalent where e.g. might open a list of examples. “I love fruit trees, i.e. cherry trees.” de facto–I know, it makes you sound smart. But only if you use it right. This phrase is basically “in reality, even if not official.” Even though Bob was just the mailroom supervisor, he was running the company because of the dirt he had on the CEO. You could say Bob was the de facto CEO from the mailroom!.” per se– by itself or inherently. “Money is not evil, per se, but the lust for money makes people do bad stuff” Please continue using useful Latin phrases—i.e., expressions borrowed from Latin that still serve a purpose in English—because, e.g., they can make your writing more precise, efficient, etc.; just remember that using them correctly is not pretentious per se, but using them incorrectly while trying to sound smart is a de facto announcement that you are, in fact, an idiot.
