Disappointment

We had a bit of disappointment in the house this weekend. One of our kids tried out for something and didn’t get it. Lots of his friends did. It’s a pretty big deal and we were all disappointed. He’s a resilient, strong kid and will thrive no matter the adversity but that doesn’t make it hurt less in the moment.

I’m really proud of him for sticking his neck out. Many people don’t take chances because they are so afraid of adversity and disappointment. But the reality is, you can’t accomplish any great thing without taking big risks. Risk of failure, risk of embarrassment, risk of being told you aren’t good enough, strong enough, smart enough, pretty enough, whatever. If you want to do amazing things, you have to take risks. And that is scary. It is scary for a young teen and scary for adults. When you stick your neck out, you just might get your head popped. But should that keep you from trying? NO!

I learn from my kids. I hope they learn from me too, but I definitely learn from them. The world we live in is scary and wide open. There are challenges they face that I never did. I never had to worry about being shamed on social media and it going viral. I never had to worry about there being a true “permanent record”.

I am proud of my kids for surviving and thriving in this modern era. It’s tough out there. We want to shield them but we can’t and shouldn’t. When our son got the news, we hurt for him. Keeping the hurt off of him, keeps it away from us too. But that is not how you impact the world. And he absolutely will impact the world.

Don’t be afraid. Stick your neck out. Do something incredible today.
